It must have looked something like this when Otto Lilienthal made his first attempts to fly. But he fitted the wings to his flying machines crosswise rather than lengthwise when he first attempted to glide in a "heavier than air" machine.
The attempt shown in this picture was done with cellular polycarbonate sheets.
